Title I

Title I Overview

Title I is the largest federal funding program for education.  Title I provides financial assistance through State educational agencies (SEAs) to local educational agencies (LEAs) and public schools with high numbers or percentages of poor children to help ensure that all children meet challenging State academic content and student academic achievement standards.

LEAs target the Title I funds they receive to public schools with the highest percentages of children from low-income families.  Schools enrolling at least 40 percent of students from poor families are eligible to use Title I funds for schoolwide programs that serve all children in the school.

Title I is designed to support State and local school reform efforts tied to challenging State academic standards in order to reinforce and amplify efforts to improve teaching and learning for students farthest from meeting State standards. Individual public schools with poverty rates above 40 percent may use Title I funds, along with other Federal, State, and local funds, to operate a "schoolwide program" to upgrade the instructional program for the whole school.

Title I Components

All Title I schools must complete as comprehensive needs assessment that drives all aspects of school operations.

  • School reform strategies must be implemented to address the identified needs.
  • There must be high quality and ongoing professional development for staff to address the needs of the school.
  • Parent involvement is critical and integral part of day-to-day operations in a Title I School.
  • Strategies are in place to aid in the transitions between academic grade levels, as well as school levels, i.e., pre-school to kindergarten and elementary to middle school.
  • Teachers are actively involved in the use of assessments and instructional decisions are driven by data analysis.
  • Title I schools develop specific instructional activities for students identified with the greatest needs.

Title I schools coordinate and integrate resources and services from federal, state, and local sources.

Policy Involvement: (Describe your plan to involve parents in the development of this policy and how you intend to document their participation and feedback)

  • The Parent Advisory Committee will review and provide input at one of their meetings during the school year
  • Parents will be able to provide input during a regularly scheduled School Improvement Team Meeting during the month of September
  • Minutes of these meetings will be kept on file in the school Title I Documentation Box
  • Parents will be provided a survey at the end of the school year to provide input for the Title I Family and Engagement Policy as a means to help with planning for the next school year
  • Survey will be provided in both English and Spanish
  • Survey results will be printed and housed in the Title I Documentation Box

Shared Responsibility for High Student Academic Achievement (Describe how you plan to develop your school compact and gain meaningful collaboration with families.  Attach the compact when completed)

  • Joint Development
    • Parents will be invited and informed of meetings of the School Improvement Team, Open House, and Literacy Night - they will be given an opportunity at these meetings to see and learn about what their students are learning 
    • Parents will receive a Title I Survey at the end of the school year in order to share their opinions and suggestions for our Title I program
  • Annual Title I Meeting
    • SES will offer a session on Title I at our annual Literacy Night - a presentation will be available for parents to view and learn about the components of our Title I policies and our Engagement Policy
    • The presentation will also be made available on our school website following Literacy Night
  • Communication
    • Invitation to parents for Literacy Night/Title I Night will be made via letter and social media, and school website
  • School Parent Compact
    • Revise current compact and include parent input from survey and input from Parent Advisory Committee
    • Include in Compact a bulleted list of expectations from each stakeholder group involved in the child’s education

Building Capacity for Involvement: (Describe how your school will provide programs to assist parents in building capacity to be involved in their child’s education)

  • Offer a Thinking Maps Workshop for Parents of our students, divided into grade spans, K-2, 3-5, and 6-8.  We will provide a meal and childcare for these events. We will also provide materials and training through funds obtained from a grant by Alleghany Writers and Alleghany Community Foundation, both organizations that we have partnered with this year.
  • Work with Communities in Schools to seek out and recruit new community members that will serve our school as volunteers, mentors, and workers.  
  • Reach out to faith based organizations for support in the areas of volunteers and food donations.
  • We will host a Literacy Night that will also include Title I engagement and information distribution - parents will learn literacy strategies with their children that they can take home
  • We will host a STEM Night that will display what our students are doing with STEM activities during the school day - parents can also take part in the activities alongside their children to get a hands on introduction to school STEM activities
  • We will host a Science Night for our parents that will display what our students are learning and doing in science classes.  Parents will be able to take part in activities with their students to learn about science activities that are happening in school
  • At all events, we will ask parents and students to sign in for documentation purposes - sign in sheets will be placed in our school TItle I Documentation Box

 Accessibility: (Describe how you plan to make all of these programs accessible to all of the parents at your school)

  • We will solicit support from partner agencies in our community and local faith-based organizations to help us in the areas of volunteer support and food donations.   
  • We will provide child care at parent only learning opportunities so that parents can focus on the learning.
  • We will provide documents in both English and Spanish to our parents
  • We will work with Communities in Schools to help solicit materials to support our activities and address needs that are shared by our parents
  • We will utilize our school website, social media, and Connect Ed phone messages as outlets for information to our parents - as well as typical print media
